Join us at Kingsland Homestead on Thursday, September 21 at 6pm, as we host author/historian Richard Melnick who will present an exciting slideshow based on his newly released book Long Island City in 1776: The Revolution Comes to Queens

Richard’s book covers the 11-square miles of Long Island City, including Astoria,
Steinway, Ravenswood, Dutch Kills, Sunnyside, Queens Plaza, Hunters Point, and the local
waterways Of The East River, including Newtown Creek, Hell Gate, and Bowery Bay.

Focusing on 1776 in LIC, the book discusses the many facets of the struggle, from early
colonial agitation against unfair British laws and actions, to local western Queens men voting for
or against the Continental Congress, the Declaration of Independence, the August 1776 Battle of Long Island, and the British and Hessian occupation of all of the future Long Island City and
Queens County. The book is 224 pages long and has 92 images and will be available for sale.

Richard Melnick, an Astoria resident since 1995, graduated St. John’s University in 1984 with a B.A. in Political Science, and served in the U.S. Army from 1984-1992 in West Germany and seven U.S. states.
