Join us at Kingsland on February 28th for a NEW book about Slavery in Queens!

Unhired Hands  is about slavery in Queens (which was part of Long Island until the late 19th century) and Massachusetts (where the first Africans and Native Americans were enslaved). I also could read from a new chapbook about slavery in The Bronx. The book focuses on 3 women Millie Tunnell and Victoria Earle Matthews both buried in Maple Grove Cemetery and Martha Peterson who was featured on PBS’ series Secrets of the Dead, the lady in the iron coffin episode and is buried in Maspeth Mt. Olivet Cemetery but had been enslaved in Corona and subsequently part of the first free-black Queens community, Dutch Lane.
