Come to Kingsland Homestead on August 29th, 2025 at 7pm and meet Rebecca Bratspies, an award-winning Queens-based author and law professor who will discuss her latest book, Naming Gotham: The Villains, Rogues, and Heroes Behind New York Place Names, winner of the 2023 Association of Public Historians of New York Award for Excellence, the 2024 Independent Author Network Award for Outstanding Nonfiction, the 2024 American Legacy Book Award for US History and the 2024 New York Big Book Award for Regional History.  

In Naming Gotham, New York City’s history comes alive through the stories of the people New York named its streets, neighborhoods, and institutions to honor. There are Revolutionary War figures, civil rights heroes, robber barons, and Tammany Hall politicos. Through meticulously researched but gossipy accounts of their lives, Rebecca invites audiences to think differently about the past and to consider who gets to decide what counts as history.
