In Case You Missed It: Addisleigh Park Virtual Tour

It was the home base for Jackie Robinson. James Brown was on the scene. Ella Fitzgerald kept her green-and-yellow basket there. Addisleigh Park is a small portion of western St. Albans that was once known as “Black Hollywood East” because so many prominent African-American athletes and entertainers lived there. However, it also has a history that includes covenants that prohibited white homeowners from selling to non-whites.

Queens Historical Society President Jason Antos and Board Member Rob MacKay will lead a tour of this Southeastern Queens district that has earned its landmarking status in 2011. They’ll visit some of the former homes of the rich and famous and other notable spots while discussing how the area went from farmland to golf courses to large suburban homes with Neo-Classical and Mediterranean architecture as per the Garden City Movement. They’ll also make a stop at a neighborhood mural that has drawn international attention.
