Democracy in Action: Philip Guston

Currently On View, and Online!

Dates: March 6, 2019 – Ongoing
Location: Jacob A. Riis Settlement House Community Center

This exhibition is about the Canadian American artist, Philip Guston (1913-1980). Guston was a prolific artist who was eventually commissioned by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). QHS wanted to highlight the WPA’s involvement in Queens. The Work and Play mural was commissioned by the WPA in 1938 to be displayed at the Jacob A. Riis Settlement House Community Center in Long Island City, Queens. The mural depicts scenes from the community as observed by Philip Guston. Families, construction workers, musicians and other prevalent figures work and struggle against a minimalist backdrop, as is a recurring theme in Guston’s murals. The exhibition was installed in the Settlement House on March 6th, 2019 and is ongoing.
