The history of Queens and greater New York is as complex and layered as any piece of woven fabric. Come explore the fabric of the African American experience in Queens, Long Island and Greater New York State as told through narrative quilts made by hand by the quilters of Quilt-N-Queens and students of the Oakwood Friends School and Vassar College. Some of these quilts were created in collaboration with the Oh, Freedom! Quilting Project.

Each quilt features highly detailed visuals perfectly timed for America’s 250th anniversary. Come join us at Queens Historical Society at Kingsland Homestead for the opening gala of our new gallery exhibit, on Sunday October 11 at 2:30pm. This immersive experience spotlights local history with each quilt memorializing the story of a person, place or event.

Quilters, Thadine Wormly and Jacqueline Colson, will be on hand along with Laura Chenven of the Mid-Hudson Antislavery History Project.

Admission is $10 for non-members and $7 for QHS members. Children under 12 and veterans are admitted for free.

This program features the work of Quilt-N-Queens and Oh, Freedom!; a program of the Mid-Hudson Antislavery History Project which memorializes the history of enslavement and abolition in the Hudson Valley through the art of quilting.
