About Educational Programs


Operating since 1968, the Queens Historical Society is dedicated to providing educational programming and unique learning opportunities to our New York City community. Our programming is designed to cover all ages (K-12), appropriate for Special Education classes, and compliant with the new NYC Department Of Education Social Studies curriculum. Visit the Kingsland Homestead


Headquartered in the historic Kingsland Homestead museum, the Queens Historical Society offers guided tours, programs and workshops for students, youth organizations, adults, families and persons with special needs. We are located in the historic Weeping Beech Park. Nurture your students' love of history with a visit to a house museum, and explore our exhibits. Our programs are varied and designed to accommodate grades K-12.

Once the date is booked QHS requires that you send a non-refundable deposit of $25 (per group). Please make checks payable to Queens Historical Society.

NEW! VICTORIAN CRAFTS: SILHOUETTE PORTRAITS

Before cameras and photography became more accessible, silhouette portraits were a popular and an affordable means to capture images of family members and loved ones. Each student will have the opportunity to create his or her very own silhouette.
Appropriate for grades K-6
Price: $100
Duration: 60 minutes

NEW! NOW IT'S ELECTRIC !

This program presented by Con Edison will trace the history of power from colonial times to present. The advent of electricity in the late 19th century has paved the way for the age of technology. Students will be introduced to various aspects in the scientific field. Appropriate for grades 7-8

FLUSHING WALKING TOUR

Walk the Flushing Freedom Mile and learn about some of the 21 historic sites many of which are NYC landmarks—and their connection to freedom, Underground Railroad, as well as the activists instrumental and these movements.
Appropriate for grades 5-12
Price: $100 Duration: 60 minutes


ARCHAEOLOGICAL WORKSHOP

This outdoor activity is a fun opportunity for a hands-on learning experience in archaeology. Students will participate in a simulated archaeological excavation in Weeping Beech Park to uncover the objects used in daily life from precolonial to colonial era. Learn skills from artifact analysis and interpretation to advanced field methods.
Appropriate for K-8th graders.

COLONIAL TOYS & GAMES

One of our most popular programs, this hands-on workshop focuses on everyday activities of children in the 18th and 19th centuries. Students will have an opportunity to play with historic toys such as the Buzz Saw and Thaumatrope.

THE ROAD TO FREEDOM: PAPER QUILTING WORKSHOP

This art-based workshop focuses on the Underground Railroad, including secret messages that were encoded through patchwork quilts to help guide slaves to freedom. Students will create paper quilts using authentic symbols and messages.
Appropriate for grades K-6

Tours for Student and Adult Groups


FLUSHING FREEDOM MILE WALKING TOUR

Students tour downtown Flushing and learn about 21 historic sites, many of which are New York City landmarks, and their connection to freedom. Many of the sites are also associated with the Underground Railroad, as well as activists who were dedicated to freedom and education. We also offer a modified walking tour geared specifically towards 2nd graders and their unit on communities.
